The 2018 Australian Bocce Championships for both men and women was hosted by the Redlands Sporting Club and took place at the Redlands Bocce Centre courts between 7-11 June 2018.

This is a major event on the bocce calendar and the last time we held such an event was in 2013. We welcomed 22 state and regional teams from Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales, ACT and Queensland to participate in this great tournament.

The hard work of the Redlands Bocce committee and members prior to the event made it worthwhile with the great feedback we received from players regarding our bocce drome as a top facility and venue.

The Opening Ceremony was well orchestrated with the Redlands Pipe Band leading the players on to the courts in their respective teams, along with members of the Special O’s who participated as banner holders for each state and regional team.

The invited guests and dignitaries included Mayor Karen Williams and Mr Williams, Cr Wendy Boglary, Mr Frank Funari (President of the Australian Bocce Federation), Mr Gian Villani (President of Qld Bocce Federation), Ray & Lina Cher (BA delegates) and our very own President of the Redlands Sporting Club, Mr Don Seccombe & Mrs Seccombe. After the welcoming speeches the Mayor declared the 2018 Bocce Championships Open and was invited along with Cr Boglary, Don Seccombe, Frank Funari and Gian Villani to roll the official opening bocce bowls down the court – much to everyone’s amusement.

Over the following four days the games continued in the various disciplines of singles, double, triples, throw/bowl, precision and rapid throw with some excellent performances and results. Anthony Parlato from our Redlands team won first in the men’s singles. Barbara Jones from Redlands won first in Precision. Barbara also got 2nd in Singles. In the triples the ladies Redlands team of Barbara Jones, Elena Bunin and Nevia Deklic came 2nd.

We had great food which was prepared lovingly by our volunteer chefs Teresa Nardone, AnnaMaria Trifaro, Orietta Bunin and Mary Topatig. We are grateful and like to acknowledge that we appreciate all they have done for us as it was a massive job to look after so many players and delegates each lunch and dinner. Thanks need to go Peter & Rego who were needed for the heavy lifting. To all the ladies who came to help serve at lunch and dinner times – thank you – it allowed us to be on time at the next game. A big “Thank you” to Sandi Zeller and Redlands Sporting Club staff as your help and expertise in setting up and preparing for the various meetings, lunches and dinners made everything so easy.

The outstanding work of Kerrie Reitano as our MC for the Opening Ceremony and also Presentation Night needs to be acknowledged. As a result of her excellent performance in the duties of this role both nights were a great success – thank you Kerrie.

Lastly but not least many thanks to the referees: Neil Parlato, Joe Reitano, Kerrie Reitano, Peter Topatig and Gian Villani who stood around waiting for someone to call them over to measure or settle a query.

Angelina & Domenico Canizzaro thank you for your help – you came very early every day – Domenico to prepare the courts and Angelina to do the early morning clean up and then morning teas. Thank you to Mina Scodellaro for assisting the players with water, coffee, biscuits and general clean up. Also, Peter Bunin thanks for being there to organize the drinks it was appreciated.
